Tech set-up tips for your online Pilates class

Phone or Computer?

I always recommend using as big a screen as you can so that you can see the screen from any position on your mat and you don’t have to crank your neck in uncomfortable positions too often.

First time using Zoom? No problem!

Follow these steps to download the app and sign in to your class:

  1. In your appointment email, there will be a meeting link (URL).

  2. After clicking on the meeting link, follow the prompts to download and install Zoom.

  3. After installing Zoom you will be able to join the meeting using the meeting ID number or link provided.

I usually log on 5 minutes before class so if you have any questions about set up we can chat before class starts.

Audio and video options

When joining the meeting you may be prompted with options to keep audio on or off and video on or off. I recommend keeping the audio muted until you have something to say. Also:

  • During class, it is always your choice to keep your camera on or off.

  • If you need to rest or turn the camera off briefly for any reason, feel free!

  • The instructor will mute all students during class so that one student’s audio does not interrupt another student’s workout. At the end of class, you are free to unmute again or exit the class as you like.

Camera set-up

Have your computer/phone positioned so you can hear and see the instructor clearly from your mat in a sitting position.

If possible, you want to be able to see the screen clearly if you are on your stomach, on your back or in an all-fours position as well. If you can’t, no problem – the instructor will give clear instructions so you can follow along aurally. Or if you are using a phone, you can easily move the phone as you change positions.

Have your camera positioned before the class starts. You can do this from the video settings in your Zoom app. During set-up, consider:

  • The exercises can be done kneeling, sitting, lying down, on your side or in a standing position

  • Set up your mat similar to the instructor’s (if you have the space) so that instructions to use your left or right limbs are easy to follow. ie. If the instructor has her camera on the mat facing the long side, see if you can set yours up similiarily.

  • For private sessions, if possible, have the camera far enough away from your body so that the instructor can see what you are doing but most important is that you can see and hear the instructor

One and done!

Once you have your camera set up for the first class, it’s super-easy next time. During your initial session, we’ll make sure you have the optimal set-up so you can get the most out of your workout.
